8 Tips for a Stress-Free Move
Moving house is one of the most stressful things you will ever do. Not only do you have to pack up all your worldly goods, but unpack them at the other end. Then there are still the children, seniors and pets to take care of and ensure they don’t get lost along the way. So here are 8 tips to help cut down the stress of moving.
- According to professional removalists, packing and booking the removalists early is imperative, but not so many people think about connecting the internet at their new home. Arrange it several weeks before the move to be sure that there will be a connection on the day you move in.
- The electricity connection needs to be set up for the day you move in so that you won’t be paying for the previous tenant’s usage.
- Moving Pets and toddlers can be difficult to handle with everything else that you have to do. If possible, leave the children with friends or relatives and put the pets into a pet motel.
- If it’s not possible to board your pets, make sure they travel safely in a pet carrier. Never let pets out of their carrier until you are well and truly settled in for the night. Cats especially, tend to panic and look for a place to hide. It may take days to find them. Keep them inside for several days until they have settled down.
- You will need to notify businesses of your change of address. Banks, insurance companies and so on will need to know your new address in good time. You will need to change the address on your driver’s license too. But don’t forget friends and family who will want to know where you are.
- When packing, reserve one box for your first night. This box should contain crockery, cutlery, PJs, towels and washers, soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes, clothing changes, medication and even toilet paper to make your first night less stressful.
- In addition, it is handy to have a special box that holds all you will need for unpacking and putting any furniture back together. Labelled screws, cords, Allen keys, scissors and other small tools, dusters and glue are all going to come in handy when putting up pictures or putting beds, shelves or small tables back together.
- Insurance is one of the most important things that can give you peace of mind – so long as you’ve organised it properly. Make sure your current policy ceases the day after you move out, and the new policy covers you from the day before you move in to your new place. That way you won’t need to worry about not being covered in transit.
